The two gulfs

The big theme for today and increasingly so for the next 50 to 100 years at least is inequality. This is due to an acceleration of innovation in those countries with a sufficiency of scientific research safely ensconced within their cultures and adequately funded by their governments — and a paucity of research and innovation elsewhere

There is an increasing gulf in good quality education, interesting jobs and prosperity between upper and lower parts of the populations within advanced countries. Also, an increasing gulf is developing between half a dozen advanced countries — particularly Germany, Britain and America — and the remaining 190 countries with the possible exception of any or all of the ‘Confucian Five’. In the latter bunch scientific research is not notably successful so far due to too hierarchical cultures which militate against lateral thinking.
